| LondonHaringey1 Oct - 1 FebExhibition: Carnival Roots & Rhythm
An educational display looking at the origins of carnival and the spectacle in place today. The exhibition includes a new short-film by local film-maker Angela Phillips, on the importance of Carnival to the elders in Haringeys Black community.
Carnival is a mixture of European and African traditions that has, over generations, evolved into a celebration that is renowned across the world. In this film, the members of Haringey's University of the Third Age (HU3A) share their memories from their homelands. From Mash Romani to Independence Day, each celebration has its own story, costumes, dances and meaning. Through local dance troupe Movement Angol with their 2008 programme Leaping Spirit, we learn the history behind the dances of the Quadrille, the Kumina and the Bele, and how they are influencing the way we dance today. The film also features Quadrille dancing by Patsy Scott and Co.

 1 OctFilm Screening: Yaaba
Across a stark desert landscape a young boy (Noufou) befriends an old woman (Sanga) whom he comes to call 'Yaaba' (meaning granny), unlike the village youths who see her as a witch.
Idrissa Ouedraogo, Burkina Faso's best-known director, specializes in telling stories of African village life. As western viewers watching his films we may feel more like anthropologists than cinema-goers. However, although the relationship depicted may seem almost emotionless and it takes time to perceive the real love that is there, this slow film is nevertheless intriguing and thoroughly worthwhile.

The stunning motifs were developed by the Asante people of Ghana, West Africa, who evolved the unique art of Adinkra printing cloths, made and used exclusively by royalty and spiritual leaders for sacred ceremonies. The meaning of each symbol derives from a proverb, history, events, human attitude, animal behaviour, plants and shapes of inanimate and man-made objects.
