What happened in the 2000s:

  • Aaliyah dies in a plane crash in the Bahamas aged 22. Eight months later TLC band member Lisa Left Eye is killed in a car accident.

  • Dizzee Rascal wins the prestigious Mercury Music Prize for his album Boy In Da Corner, at 19 the youngest person to ever win it.

  • At the Athens Olympics Kelly Holmes becomes the first British female to win two gold medals, is awarded the BBC sports personality of the year and is made a dame in 2005.

  • US TV host Oprah Winfrey becomes the world's first black woman billionaire.

  • Halle Berry became the first African American woman to win the Best Actress Oscar for her leading role in the film Monster's Ball.
