Africa Connects: Freedom of Nine Cities
On this day 15 years ago, Glasgow welcomed Nelson Mandela, who received the Freedom of Nine Cities. Join People’s Palace curators on a tour of the museum, which reflects and discusses the links between Glasgow and Africa, from anti-slavery and anti-apartheid to an emerging African presence in Glasgow today.

Africa Connects: ‘My Africa, My Glasgow’
An exhibition of work from six months of Afr-I-can workshops and events at Kelvingrove, focusing on the African communities involved. Afr-I-can is a positive celebration of African culture, and is a partnership between Glasgow-based artists of African origin and Kelvingrove.

A weekend of fun free activities with an African flavour, open to everyone. Includes interactive workshops for all ages, music, stories and fashion from Pan African Arts Scotland and Paragon. She settles in the Shields and Pardesi Heroes

Glasgow’s contribution to the campaign to abolish slavery in the United States
Bernard Aspinwall will relate how Glasgow and the West of Scotland made significant contributions to the abolition movement through support for American anti-slavery societies. The city hosted leading American campaigners like William Lloyd Garrison and Harriet Beecher Stowe, helped to educate African-Americans, and assisted in the amelioration of freed slaves in the aftermath of the civil war.

Black History Month the Africa Centre Scotland
As part of Black History Month the Africa Centre Scotland is holding an event at the City Chambers, High Street, Edinburgh on Saturday 17th from 12.00pm – 4.00pm. There will be displays from different organisations, an opportunity for discussion, youth and children’s activities and a performance by the Zawadi Women’s Choir. The programme for the day includes a light lunch and refreshments, followed by talks from Nick Croft, Equalities Manager, the City of Edinburgh Council; Dr Eric J Graham, Maritime Historian and Author, University of Edinburgh; Alache Ode, Diaspora Volunteering Partnership Manager, VSO UK; and, Evelyn Nicodemus, Writer and Artist. the City Chambers, High Street, Edinburgh, 12 noon-4pm. Africa in Motion 2009 – Edinburgh African Film Festival
AIM 2009 is taking place at Edinburgh Filmhouse Cinema and other venues. See the website for the full programme which includes an Interdisciplinary AiM Symposium on the Realities and Representations of Reconciliation in Africa hosted jointly by the Centre of African Studies (CAS) at the University of Edinburgh and the Africa in Motion (AiM) Film Festival on Saturday 24th October 2009, 9am-5pm.
